After all the recent floods and storms it was wonderful to have a calm, sunny and warm day for the fifth and final race of the Winter Series. As usual, competitors paddled either one, two or three laps on the Can, but this year all the courses started and finished in front of the clubhouse.
104 competitors from 13 different clubs took part, despite the fact that the event clashed with the rescheduled Luzemore race.

As the last race of the series, the prizegiving for the day was followed by the presentation of series trophies. First, second and third place engraved glasses were given in all classes, subject to paddlers/crews having completed at least three races. There are also perpetual shields or cups for most classes.

Scott & Domas from Barking became the first winners of the new 16+ Mens K2 class, and the only paddler/crew in this series to complete a string of 5  wins.
The Dick Grieve K2 cup, formerly awarded to the fastest 16+ K2 crew overall has been re-purposed as trophy for the new Mixed K2 class - appropriate since it has been won by mixed crews every season since 2015. This went to Matt & Leah of Chelmsford - the fourth time they will put their names on it.
Mens K2 - Scott Leblanche & Domas Malinauskas (BAD)
Ladies K2 - Naomi Fuller & Tara Karthikeyan (CLM)
Mixed K2 - Matt Johnson & Leah Falltrick (CLM)
u16 K2 - Rebecca Perrin & James Johnson (CLM)
The new Mens K1 Super-Vet class on the middle-distance course has proved a popular introduction this year. Not knowing if it would catch on, the FRA had not committed to providing a perpetual trophy for it, but this is now in hand.
Doug Herbert (Chelmsford), who had held the K1 Vet Mens trophy for the last two years, and Rimantas Slanias (Barking) both took part in all five races this year. They ended the series tied on points for their best four. As Rimantas had the greater number of wins, he was therefore the class winner this year.
Tim, Ali, Cassian and Matteo each had an unbeaten run of four races in their respective age classes and are past winners of these or other WS trophies.

u18 F K1 - Sienna Payne (CLM)

The winner of the main Winter Series Club trophy was never in doubt and of course went to Chelmsford.

There was a close contest for the Dick Grieve Trophy (based on the performance of unranked juniors), with Leighton Buzzard and Cambridge tied  on 43 points. The trophy went to Leighton Buzzard for having wins race wins against Cambridge's one. Leighton Buzzard also won the  Bob Porter Trophy (for the largest number of u12 entries).

Winter Series Survey 2023-24

24/1/2024

Last season we asked paddlers to give us their opinions about the Winter Series. We had an extremely good response and spent much time deliberating over everyone's feedback. We can't fix the weather (unfortunately) and some people wanted things changed in the opposite direction to other people, so we know we won't have pleased everyone.

At the same time, the Winter Series races were re-designated as Class A races (like Haslers) which necessitated further changes to fit in with MRC rules and requirements. All together, there were quite a number of changes to this season's series!

We would now like to know how all these changes worked for you, so we are inviting you to complete a very brief, anonymous survey using GoogleForms.

To take part in the survey,
  • use the link that was mailed out to those on the FRA mailing list on 24 Jan,
  • look out for the QR code poster at the Finals at Chelmsford (Sunday 28 January 2024),
  • ask your club's WS team leader for the survey link,
  • email the FRA Secretary from any email address that has been used to place entries in the WS during this season and request a link

The Leighton Buzzard race was able to go ahead on the first attempt this year, with no ice on the canal and the recent floods subsided. As a result there was an excellent turnout of paddlers, well up on the last couple of years.
Special mention should be made of Tim Gannicott-Porter from Chelmsford for stopping to rescue of one of Leighton Buzzard's youngsters. Although it is rare for this to be rewarded with a time allowance, the circumstances of this incident were felt to be exceptional, and a small allowance was agreed which restored Tim to 1st place in the Senior Men's race.
Knowing that paddlers can be relied upon to assist others in distress, whatever the impact on their own race, is part of the core ethos of marathon racing and especially so in the winter. We encourage paddlers to let us know about these incidents so that the rescuers can be publicly commended, even though it is not practical to give a time allowance in most cases.

The next race (28 Jan at Chelmsford) will be the series finals, when all the trophies for each of the classes  are given out, as well as the club trophies.
The strong showing by the home club's own team brought them second place to Chelmsford CC, with Bishops Stortford CC in third place.

Leighton Buzzard also scored a clear victory on Dick Grieve points (based on unranked juniors), bringing them into equal first place with Bishops Stortford on 35 points, while Cambridge CC has 34. There is very much everything to play for in the final race, as any of these three clubs could be taking the Dick Grieve trophy home.
