The Stortford Regatta was again a stand-alone event in 2023, so BSCC decided to try running it as an SRC Local Sprint Regatta in the hope that this would give the event a wider reach. Members of Chelmsford CC, Cambridge CC, Lee Valley PS and Maidstone CC attended, but the majority of the competitors were from the home club. Although attendance was small, the programme of races was non-stop during the morning with 500m, 200m and 1000m events. In the afternoon there were optional fun relay races and the opportunity to have a go in a K4. During the lunch break, we were delighted to be joined by reigning KL3 World Champion and Paralympic gold medallist Laura Sugar MBE, who chatted to competitors and stayed to present the medals. The class winners on the day were:

Although only one FRA regatta took place this year, the attendance of 49 paddlers was in line with pre-covid numbers. All the clubs in the FRA sent teams, and it was also pleasing to see a small group from Hemel.

Eventually, everyone was persuaded to get off the water, so that they could collect their medals.
The final event in the series will be the Stortford Regatta on 8th September, when the award for the series will also be presented. To be eligible for a series award you need to have attended at least two regattas in the series. See the current standings on the Series results page.
The second Sprint Regatta of the season took place at Chelmsford in fine dry weather.

Six clubs attended the penultimate event of the Summer Regatta series. There were 500m and 200m K1 races and after the lunch break there were K2 races for those who still had the energy.

Herts Young Mariners Base hosted the second of the Summer Series Regattas on 10 June. Forty-three paddlers from seven different clubs took part.
The full results can be found on the Summer Series results page. Photos of the event can be found in this Flickr album. The next event in the series will be the Stortford Regatta on 9th September. The re-scheduled Chelmsford Regatta is now planned for the 23rd September and will include the presentation of the series awards.
The first race of the Summer Series opened at Leaside in a minor heatwave - somewhat bizarrely, after the Chelmsford Regatta (which should have been the first event) was called off due to snow and freezing cold conditions only 5 weeks ago. There were 33 competitors for the main part of the competition which involved several heats over 500m and 200m.
The next regatta in this series is schedule to be at Herts Young Mariners Base, Cheshunt, on Sunday 10th June. Sign up for the FRA mailing list if you would like to be alerted when the details for this and other future Summer and Winter Series events are announced.
