WS 2016-17 Race 5: Chelmer Results

Recent freezing conditions created a very real threat that the race would have to be postponed, but after a careful review of the river on Saturday the organisers felt confident in giving the go-ahead. This turned out to be fully justified and a good showing of 150 competitors came along to take part.
Mixed K2s continued to be well-represented in Class 1, comprising 10 of the 22 boats, in addition to the two  all-female crews. The fastest four crews were all mixed.

There were an unusually large number of C2 entries at this event, and the field of 7 boats in Marathon C2 (Class 12) was the biggest seen in the last 5 years. Again, the MC2s included a mixed crew (2nd) and an all-female crew (3rd).
As well as a number of independent paddlers, 11 different clubs/teams were represented. It was particularly pleasing to see a large team from The Royal Hospital School. The RHS crews all performed very well against the strong and experienced fields in Classes 1 and 12, including an impressive 8th and 10th places in Class 1.

The results of the race can be seen on the WS Results page. Host club Chelmsford were the overall winners, and also came first in Dick Grieve points (points scored by novice juniors) for the first time this season.
The final race of the series will take place at Leaside on 12 February. The usual prizegiving will be followed directly by the presentation of the series awards and trophies.
A full run-down of series results to date for both individuals (class trophies) and teams (club results) can also be found on the WS Results page. Please remember that any paddler/crew who has competed in three or more races may be eligible for a series prize, but that  final class positions will be based on each paddler/crew's best five results only.

A big vote of thanks must go to the bankside volunteers who stood about in the driving rain, helped shift muddy boats, and made intrepid efforts to get biros to work on saturated paper. Most arrived back at the Base looking as bedraggled as the competitors. Well done, you wonderful people!

The results of this race can be found on the Winter Series Results page. There you will also find the cumulated series results from all the four races to date, both for individuals and for clubs. Please remember that each competitor/crew has to have paddled in at least three races this season to be eligible for a series prize, and also that we only count your best 5 results - you may be doing better than you think.

Before the race began everyone took a few moments to remember Steve Truglia, fellow Winter Series paddler and member of Barking Canoe Club, who died in a tragic accident last week in China in the course of his work as a professional movie stunt-man.  Read the Times obituary and support the fund for his repatriation from China.

The race attracted 97 competitors and passed off without a hitch. The special Bob Porter trophies for the fastest u14 Girl and Boy were presented to Jack Skippings (CLM) and Emilia Boylan (BSF).
The full results of the day's race can be seen on the WS results page, where series results to date can also be found.
The next race will be at Cambridge on Sunday 11th December - see CAM race details.

WS 2016-17 Race 1: Stortford Results

There were 156 competitors for the opening race of the 2016-17 Winter Series, in 126 boats. The senior K2 race on the long course proved especially popular, with a massive 23 entries.
Picture
It was lovely to see most of the usual faces, and we were particular pleased to welcome a small team from Norwich CC for the first time.
The Chelmsford team supplied two new course records on the long course. Dan Johnson & James Walkinton completed the 7 miles and 6 portages in 52:42, beating the previous best time of 54:19 set in 2014 by Mark & Peter Wilkes.  The Mixed K2 record of 57:28 (2015, Leanne Brown and Aaron Jordan) fell to Mark Wilkes and Kat Wilson, who finished in 53:08.  On the middle-distance course, Melissa Johnson came very close to equalling Vicky Surrage's record of 44:44 for Ladies K1 which has stood since 2007, by completing the 5 miles and 3 portages in 44:50.
Picture
Many thanks are due to the volunteers at Stortford for staging the race, Herts Boat Rescue for providing on-water safety support and, of course, all of the competitors for turning out.

There are some photos of the event in Angela's Flickr album and a larger collection by Maria in Chris' Sze's Facebook album. Chris also made a You-Tube video (right) of the race from his boat in Vet K1.
Picture
Chelmsford were the winning team with Stortford 2nd and Barking 3rd. In the Dick Grieve table (based on performance by novice juniors only) Stortford were the winners with Chelmsford second and Leaside third. The full individual and team results can be seen on the WS Results page.
Though cold, the weather remained dry and sunny during the races, and the threatened rain did not arrive until just before the prize-giving.
The next race will be at Barking on Sunday 27th November - see the Barking WS page for full details.

The 2016-17 Winter Series of canoe marathon races will be kicking off again in November. The dates will be:

Race 1: Bishops Stortford - 6 November 2016
Race 2: Barking - 27 November 2016
Race 3: Cambridge - 11 December 2016
Race 4: Cheshunt (HYMB) - 15 January 2017
Race 5: Chelmsford - 29 January 2017
Race 6: Leaside - 12 February 2017

Full details, rules, classes etc can be found on the Winter Series page.

There is a list of races here that you can download and print out for your club or fridge door!

Paddlers racing as part of a club team should be initially registered by their designated Team Leaders. If you are the Team Leader for your club, please register with the FRA Secretary now by filling in the Team Leader Registration form (see the link on the Winter Series page) - you should be able to complete it electronically, but if there are problems please print it out and email back a photo of the completed form. You only need to do this once for the series.

Independent paddlers should each register as leader of their own "team" (or their parent where the paddler is under 18) - the paddler in this case will need to hold British Canoeing membership.

Hope to see lots of you at the first race at Bishops Stortford!

One hundred and twenty six paddlers representing 10 different clubs turned out for the final race of the series and were rewarded with some fine, crisp weather.

James Russell, Caitlin Field O'Hanlon & Danielle Clifford, and Katy Dixon each completed their 6th successive win. See the full results for the Leaside Winter Series race. David and Penny Glover have put a video of the race on You-Tube.

WS 2015-16 Race 5: Chelmer results

26/1/2016

The Chelmsford race attracted the biggest field of the series so far, and with 163 paddlers this was also Chelmsford's second highest number of entries in the last ten years. A sizeable team from the Royal Hospital School boosted the numbers in the senior K2 and Marathon C2 classes.
Picture

This year the organisers opted for a split start, with the short-course classes going off at 11am and everyone else at 12:00. Both courses ran through the town, making the race quite different from October's Hasler. Thanks to some very efficient finish marshalling it was possible to get the results all done in time for an early prize-giving.
The full results of the Chelmer Winter Series are available to download. Some photos can be found on Flickr.
Below, videos of start/finishes by Chris (BSCC) and from K2 camera by David & Penny (Cambridge CC)
A number of perpetual trophies are already in the bag for some high-performers. Leanne Brown & Aaron Jordan (Senior K2), Keith Moule (Mens K1), Danny Beazley (Vet Mens K1), James Russell (u18 Mens K1), Melissa Johnson (u18 Ladies K1), Caitlin Field O'Hanlon & Danielle Clifford (u16 K2), and Katy Dixon (12 Girls K1) have each managed to win all five of their races so far, and are therefore unassailable. In most other cases though, the winners of the class trophies (engraved glasses for first, second and third place) and the perpetual trophies hang on the outcome of the last race. Check how you are doing in the series results so far. Please remember that it is your best 5 results only that count, and each paddler/crew must have  entered at least three races to be eligible.
The series trophies will be presented at the final race - Leaside on 6th March.

WS 2015-16 Race 4: Barking results

10/1/2016

It was a cold day - but not unreasonable given that it is January after all! There was no repeat of yesterday's rain and we even had wintery sunshine. In total there were 107 entries. The new courses (2, 4 or 6 laps) meant that those on the longest course did not need to go out so far into the estuary, and thus avoided the issues with tankers which bedevilled last year's event. It also made a much better race for the spectators who got to see a lot more of the action.
Picture
The organisers were careful to check that all boats had buoyancy (note well for next year!) but got everyone onto the water with great efficiency. It was a later than usual start for the race due to the tide, but  the nature of the new courses enabled many of the classes to start simultaneously and prevented much waiting around.
Whilst Chelmsford CC were predictably 1st overall, the home team took a convincing 2nd place, well clear of Leighton Buzzard in 3rd. Barking & Dagenham CC was also the club with the highest scores from its unranked juniors, and moves into the lead for the Dick Grieve trophy.
The full race results can be seen on the Winter Series results page, together with the cumulated positions from the series so far. Also some photos of the race and this YouTube video footage (below) taken by David & Penny from their K2.
Each year Barking presents two special trophies in memory of Bob Porter, to the winners of the u14 Boys and Girls races. This year the winners were Jonathan Pirmuhamedov and Bethany Morris.

The next race will be taking place in two weeks' time at Chelmsford - please note that there is an early start time of 11:00 for those on the short course (classes 13-21), with everyone else starting at 12:00. The aim is to have the prize-giving at 1:00pm. See race details for Chelmsford.

WS 2015-16 Race 3: Cheshunt results

11/12/2015

There were 114 competitors at the race on 6th December, hosted by HYM-COPS at Herts Young Mariners Base, Cheshunt - a slightly lower turnout than usual, probably due to the blowy conditions. Choppy water caused a couple of capsizes at the start, but the course was well-manned with rescue crews.
Cheshunt WS race 2015 - K2 starts
The Mens K1 race saw a photo-finish between Keith Moule and Peter Wilkes. There were also some close results in both the men's and women's GP classes, with Lochlan Chamberlin just beating Jack Eagles, and Deborah Wilkes finishing just ahead of Deborah Cayford. Download the full Cheshunt race results.
Barking & Dagenham CC did particularly well as a club, winning the most Dick Grieve points (towards the trophy for performance by unranked juniors) and also coming second overall to Chelmsford CC.
Individual class positions at this half-way point in the series can be downloaded (series results).  Several paddlers/crews completed hat-tricks at this race, but even three wins does not guarantee a class trophy, so there is still everything to play for. The paddlers with a full set of gold medals to date are:
  • Leanne Brown & Aaron Jordan (class 1, K2)
  • Keith Moule (class 2, Mens K1)
  • Danny Beazley (class 3, Vet Mens K1)
  • James Russell (class 4, u18 Mens K1)
  • Tim Gannicott Porter (class 6, 16 Boys K1)
  • Melissa Johnson (class 7, Ladies K1)
  • Caitlin Field O'Hanlon & Danielle Clifford (class 8, K2 u16)
  • Gary Aldam & Malcolm Duckworth (class 12, Marathon C2)
  • Katy Dixon (class 21, u12 K1)
